Harvesting of Flowers

Whether picking them off the roadside or buying them from a florist’s extensive collection, keep a few things in mind when acquiring your flowers.

If you have a garden, make sure to pick the flowers right before they reach their peak. Past their prime, flowers tend not to dry or hold their color well. Don’t pick moist flowers as they may grow moldy and avoid harvesting when the sun is high as hot-sun may make the flowers wilt.

Make sure to pick flowers without any imperfections; these only tend to get even more highlighted after drying. It would be better to get the flowers online if you do not have the time for a thorough inspection.

Do ensure that you pick or order more flowers than you think you will need. Like any other craft project, making dried flower arrangements or bouquets or decor often needs materials than one can imagine. There are high chances of things breaking off, especially if you are inexperienced.

Ways to Naturally Dry Flowers

There are several techniques to make dried flowers. Some of them are:

Air-Drying

This is the most easiest process to make dried flowers. Keep the acquired flowers in relatively dark quarters (the garage, a an airy guest bedroom with the curtains drawn, etc.). Expose them to air that is warm and dry.

Long-stemmed weeds or seed-pods can be placed upright in containers with large openings that allow air to circulate around the stems and seed heads.

This way you can make dried flowers in vase and other readily available containers in your house.

There are many such different methods to air drying like air drying with screens etc. Chrysanthemums, carnations, daisies etc. are some of the flower that can be air dried.

Use of Desiccants

Desiccants are materials that absorb moisture and are most often used to dry very delicate flowers. Flowers that readily wilt, like roses, lilies, hibiscus, calendula, etc., can be preserved best only by the use of desiccants.

Silica gel is the most commonly used desiccant. Another desiccant would be a mixture of 2 parts borax and 1 part white sand. This mixture requires 3 tablespoons of non-iodized salt added to each quart of the mixture to retain the flower’s original color.

What one must do is take a shallow container and pour 1/2 inch of the desiccant. Arrange the flowers face up, except for flat-faced flowers, making sure they do not overlap each other. Pour another 1/2 inch of desiccant on top of them while making sure the shape of the flowers is right.

Place a tight lid on the container and set it aside. Check once every few days till the flowers feel dry and crisp to the touch. Pour off the desiccant carefully once they are dry.

Desiccant-dried flowers can reabsorb moisture quickly. So make sure that during humid months, you put them aside in containers layered with a desiccant at the bottom.

Desiccants can even be used to dry flowers in a microwave to speed up the drying process that usually takes days.

Making natural dried flowers using desiccants is tricky. Make sure to follow detailed instructions if you are to use them.

There are several other methods to dry flowers such as using ovens, electric dehydrator, glycerin, etc. Do check them out if the above-mentioned do not suit you!

Caring for Dried Flowers

Dried flower bouquets, decor or arrangements often gather dust, so they must be cleaned regularly. This can either be done with a dip in warm soapy water or the use of a small brush if the flowers were dried using desiccant.
